Exhibition #18 attempts to define the limit between disciplines by bringing together two architects who have decided not to work in architecture in the traditional sense.
Both Luis Úrculo and Marcia Krygier have forged a practice within the fields of the visual arts, audiovisual production, and cuisine that draws connections to architecture’s thinking and development in which they were both trained.
Their approaches to the notions of material, process, and representation, among other things, lie—in my view—at the margins of architectonic language while also partaking of the nuances and freedoms of the disciplines in which they currently work.
This show interrogates the permeability of architectonic language, its ability to absorb and learn from other languages and other media. Architectonic language here imposes its rhythms, structures, and project-based logics in an expansive fashion, attempting to take hold of other fields that engage space, human relations, and the definition of the universe around us.
To what extent can we say that a kind of work can be considered architecture or design? When does it cease to be so? What is it that determines a discipline’s field? Is it a field of action? A commercial format? A market? Can food be envisioned as a work of architecture? Can a simple and pure act like chewing gum be considered architecture?
I am interested in a broad definition of the discipline composed by tools and logical orders that allow us to dialogue with our environment. And it is in that idea of dialogue that I attempt to counter prejudice against what seems unknown in order to forge a strong relationship to what is known.
I understand the limit that virtually divides disciplines to be the same edge that joins and links them. I have always thought that the greatest value of architectonic language is its ability to bind orders, realities, and systems.
This show goes lavish distances as it pursues the confines of a discipline that is constantly expanding and that still encompasses ingenious and powerful practices like Luis and Marcia’s.
